How to Get Admission in University of Delhi?

Established in 1922, University of Delhi is a premier & one of the topmost universities of the country. It started with just 3 colleges & 750 students. It has now emerged as one of the largest academic institutions of the country with over 7 lacs students & 80 colleges under its recognition. With a vast array of courses & programs, experienced faculty, eminent alumni & modern infrastructure, it attracts students from all over the country & even internationally. It has two campuses, North & South. Both the campuses are very well connected by Delhi Metro. Though various colleges are located in most of the parts of Delhi but to make education even more accessible to students, the administration is considering setting up West & East Campuses.

Admission Time: After the declaration of class 12th board exam results towards the end of May every year, admission time in University of Delhi starts. Depending upon the marks obtained in class 12th, students apply to various colleges.

Admission Application:
From Offline to Online – Gone are the days when students were required to reach college on time, line up in front of the admission counter & wait in long queues to submit their application forms.

Application to Delhi University’s colleges can now be made online by following the below steps:
Registration: Students who wish to apply for admission log on to the common Admission portal & register themselves on the on payment of the required fees. Fees can be paid through debit, credit card & net banking. Username & password needs to be created for future logins. Online registration commences from 30th May & 3rd June every year for UG & PG, M Phil & Ph.D programmes.
a.College Selection: After registration, students should check the cut off (minimum qualifying percentage for admission) of the course, one wishes to apply for. In case he/she qualifies, college can be selected.
b. Upload Documents: Some documents need to be uploaded. The application is considered incomplete without them. These are:-

  • Photo: Passport size
  • Signature of applicant scanned
  • Class 12th mark sheet: Self-attested
  • Class 10th mark sheet: Self-attested
  • Caste certificate issued by the competent authority.
  • Sports &/or Extracurricular activity certificated, if applicable.

c. Documents verification: Students are required to be present in the colleges for document verification at the specified time. Timings are as below:-

  • 9.30 a.m to 1.30 p.m. – Morning colleges
  • 4 p.m to 7 p.m. – Evening colleges

Whats New In Admissions 2019: The process of applying to Delhi University has undergone many changes & some new features are introduced. These new features are highlighted as under:

  1. Online Application instead of offline.
  2. Registration fees increased from Rs.100 to Rs.250 (for the General category).
  3. Cancellation fees also increased to Rs.100/-
  4. Real-time lives display of total seats/registration available.
  5. Admission based on Sports/ECA cannot be more than 10% of the total strength of every class.
  6. Stream change: Students can now change the stream during the admission process. A deduction of 2.5% of the best of four marks will be done. Earlier, it was 5%.
  7. Option to make changes in application forms also available.

Mode of Course Admission:
UG & PG Admissions: There are two modes in which the Delhi University accepts admission to its various UG & PG courses:
a. Merit-Based: 10+2 board exams are the qualifying exams for merit-based admissions. Depending upon the marks obtained in 10+2, students can seek admissions. Merit-based courses are BABA (Hons)B.Sc. (Hons)B.VocB.Com & B.Com (Hons). Admission commences in May every year. “Best of four” marks need to be calculated. This is an average of marks in the four subjects: First Language (Core / Elective) & three other subjects depending upon the course to which he/she seek an admission. For example, if a student wishes to apply for the B.Com course, the best of four marks will be the average of marks scored in English or Hindi (Language), Accountancy, Economics & Business Studies. Cut off list are declared by various colleges. Cut off for a particular course means minimum marks (%), for admission in that course. The first cut off list is declared towards the end of June every month. After the first list, the subsequent list is issued later at regular intervals till the end of July every year. Documents are verified, once the student qualifies for admission as per the cut off list.
b. Entrance Based: DU accepts admissions to some of its UG & PG courses based on marks scored in the entrance examination conducted by it. NTA (National Training Agency) conducts JAT (Joint Admission Test) on behalf of DU. Students can enroll for the entrance in June & admit cards are available within one week from the last date of application. Courses offered based on the entrance are as below:-

M.Phil & Ph.D Admissions: Delhi University offers various M.Phil & Ph.D. courses in addition to the UG & PG courses. These courses are offered in various specializations. Students who seek admissions in these courses should keep important aspects into consideration:
a. Eligibility Criteria: For M.Phil, Minimum 55% marks in Master’s degree & for Ph.D., minimum 55% marks in Masters / M.Phil degree.
b. Selection: For both the courses, the selection is done based on the Entrance test & Personal interview. Minimum qualifying marks for the entrance exams are 50%. A list of candidates shortlisted for interview & interview date are notified on the M.Phil /Ph.D. admission portal.

MD / MS / MDS Admissions: Admissions to theses are also offered by the Faculty of Medical Sciences, are granted based on the entrance examination. These exams are NEET-PG / NEET-MDS. Students seeking admissions to these courses should consider:
a. Eligibility Criteria: Students must submit application forms on www.fmsc.ac.in along with fees of Rs.1500/-. Students should have passed MBBS (for MD/MS/Diploma) & BDS exam for the MDS course. Completion of a one-year internship is also mandatory.
b. Selection: Based on ranks secured in NEETPG/NEET-MDS, the final selection of the medical students is done.

Foreign Student: Foreign student advisors are appointed by Delhi University to assist & guide foreign students. Students can reach out to advisors for their queries at their office during working hours.
